Mauritius – Amazing Natural Beauty

Mauritius
My brother and his family live in Mauritius so a visit to the beautiful island was always on the cards. It seems like a tricky place to get to but in reality, is very accessible. My eldest son and I flew to Perth and then 8 hours to Mauritius. Michael and the boys fly from Mumbai to Dubai and then onto Mauritius.

Where to stay: We wanted to stay in walking distance to my brother’s house which is in Tamarin Bay, so we hired an Airbnb. There are many resort accommodations on the islands varying in price so it’s a matter of what you can afford.

How to get around: There is a network of buses and taxis but for the most freedom a car is necessary. Be warned thou that they drive defensively so you need to keep your wits about you. The airport is not located centrally so you can expect a ½ hour to an hour trip depending on where you are staying.
Costs: The local currency is Mauritian Rupees and there are ATMs readily available and many places take credit cards. In terms of costs, somethings are expensive and others not. You can eat relatively cheaply from local food outlets or by shopping at one of the many supermarkets on the island. There is also a network of restaurants which as accessible and vary in price and quality. My sister in-law said that there has been a big improvement in what you can buy on the island as compared to 7 years ago when they moved there. The main city is Port Louis and there is a large fabric and manufacturing trade which exists. There is a food market and souvenirs in the center of the city called. The Mauritian baskets and embroided table cloths make great take homes.
What to eat? The local specialties include Boule which is a type of broth with dumpling and comes with noodles. With the French influence you will find a plentiful supply of baguette, wine and cheese. It would appear every supermarket sells different things so sometimes it becomes a bit of a hunting and gathering mission.
What to do? Mauritius a natural wonderland and outdoor playground. The must do’s include venturing out on a boat for the day either to see the island or swim with the dolphins. With so many amazing mountains hiking is also a must. We climbed two mountains including La Morne and Black Water Gorge National Park. There are different hikes for varying skill levels and the views from the lockouts are amazing. Snorkeling, water sports and paddle boards are accessible. The natural beauty is amazing and there are so many places to enjoy it from beaches to mountains.
Length of stay: If your into watersports and outdoor activities I would recommend staying 10 days in Mauritius. Its such a beautiful place. Check the weather thou as they experience cyclones and a wet and hot season.
