We had been doing a lot of hiking so when we heard about the Quilotoa Loop we wondered if it was possible to do it with our boys aged 9 and 11. There wasn’t much information regarding kids doing the hike but we thought we would give it a go. The Quilotoa Loop is a hike in the mountains of Ecuador about 2 hours from Latagunga or 3 hours south of Quito. There are two directions you can take for the loop and I found the most useful information on this blog https://traveloutlandish.com/blog/quilotoa-loop-trek-laguna-de-quilotoa/ Day 1 We left our luggage at a hotel in Latacuga and caught the 9.30am bus to…

Galapagos on a Family Budget
Galapagos is one of those must see places but like other must see places they come with a higher than usually price range. For a family of 4 if we did a cruise it could end up costing around $10,000 AUD for a week which was way outside of our usual budget. We decided that we would visit Galapagos but knew we needed to stick within a much smaller budget than most. First thing was to book the flights. We flew from Guayaquil to Baltra which cost around $1880 AUD or $1,500 USD. Next was accommodation and given our budget we needed somewhere where we could cook our own food.…

Peru Machu Picchu and More
So our Peru adventures started in Puno with a night on the floating islands of Uros. This was an awesome experience which the kids loved. We chose Uros Qhota Uta Lodge and they arranged a taxi to pick us up from the bus station to transfer us to a jetty where they picked us up in a boat to take us to the floating island. The islands are amazing with very comfortable accommodation. The family was very welcoming and we set off in a traditional boat on sunset around the waterways which was so calm and relaxing. A lovely 3 course meal followed which was cooked using traditional cooking methods.…

Bolivia Overland Adventures
Bolivia After our Bolivian Salt Flat adventure our travels through Bolivia continued. After regrouping in Uyuni we traveled to Potosi by bus which took about 3 ½ hours. To catch a bus, you can book online or go to the bus station the day before or on the day. Buses leave every hour. We caught Emperador which cost about 30 Bolivian each or about $6 AUS and it was a great service. Potosi is a mining town set amount the mountains of Bolivia. We stayed in the old town in an Airbnb and could explore most of the city by foot. We were only there for one day and it…

Bolivian Salt Plains with Kids, is it safe?
San Pedro Atacama to Uyuni overland. To do it or not to do it with kids that is the question? Given our plan to visit Bolivia it seemed the logical choice to go overland from San Pedro but given the high altitude reach nearly 5,000 metres above sea level there was a cautious approach and need for research. Research included reading blogs of families who had previously undertaken the journey https://jeeradventures.wordpress.com and investigating the many tour operators who offer the trip. The later was the most frustrating and confusing because there are so many and because there is so much information to sift through not mention the many horror stories…

Chilean Family Adventures
South America Adventures with Kids Chile Santiago was our first stop in Chile. I was fortunate to arrive on a clear day, so flying past the snow-capped Andes was amazing. In Santiago we chose to stay near Providencia at an Airbnb https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/4383588 which was comfortable and easily accessible. In Santiago our mode of getting around was walking, so we walked a lot. We visited the stunning Cerro San Cristóbal on a hill in northern Santiago which takes about an hour to walk up to from its base in Barrio Bella Vista but is worth it as the view is amazing. http://santiagotourist.com/cerro-san-cristobal-spectacular-panoramic-view-of-santiago/ On the way down we stopped on Barrio Bella…

Central and Northern Spain
Central and Northern Spain Our travels continued through Spain as we headed North to Toledo and then on to Salamanca. Toledo Toledo is a beautiful hill top city located just south of Madrid making it a popular day trip destination for visitors from the capital. During the day you will find it super busy but at night it becomes quieter and more relaxing. While visiting Toledo we visited the Alcazar Building and War Museum which is huge and well worth the 5 Euro entry fee. The building and displays are never ending, and you could spend half a day here just wondering around. We also did the walk from Alcantara…

Southern Spain Andalucia- Olives, history, tapas and so much more
Southern Spain While we were sad to say goodbye to Portugal we were also excited to start our travels in Spain. We had only visited Northern Spain in the past so Southern Spain was a bit of a mystery. Our first stop was southern Spain’s Andalucia region which is made up of endless valleys of olive plantations, the amazing Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, beautiful cities and awesome tapas. The siesta also rains supreme in the region with many shops and restaurants closing at 3pm and not reopening until 8pm. Its hard to get used to going out late in the evening but the streets are buzzing with people of all…

Southern Portugal
Originally we had anticipated spending the bulk of our time in Portugal in the South rather than the North. As it turns out, we did the opposite. We found the North suited our style of travel more than the South because it was less touristy. Don’t get me wrong, the South is nice but its very touristy compared to the North. The following is was our intinerary: Sesimbra: We chose Sesimbra south of Lisbon over Lisbon (we had stayed there previously) on our return travel south. While a nice place to visit again it felt a bit touristy which is not for us but for many. We stayed at an…

Northern Portugal
Northern Portugal with Kids Portugal has long been on our bucket list of places to visit and I’m so glad we weren’t disappointed. What an amazing country. We spent a total of 5 weeks travelling north to south and visited some fantastic places. Lisbon 4 days: We had no idea that we had booked to visit Lisbon during Euro Vision 2018. I did think at the time that accommodation options were lacking and no wonder the place was full and had the most amazing party atmosphere. It’s a beautiful city and a great place to explore. Due to a lack of accommodation we ended up staying at Costa de Caprica…
